Q. Side of triangle is 6 more than the height to that side. Area of the triangle is 260 m2 find the length of the side and height

Answer :

Hi Maya,  Thanks for the question.

Here is the solution:

Topic : Triangle

Concept and Method:

Its mentioned that side is 6 more than the height to that side.

It means  side given is Base

Let h be height then  base would be  h+6

Area of Triangle = 1/2  *  Base  * Height

Substituting the values, we get

260 = 1/2 * (h+6) * h

Solving we get,  h2 + 6h - 520 = 0

Splitting middle term,  h2 - 20h + 26h - 520 = 0

Solving,    h(h-20)  + 26(h -20) = 0

We get,   (h-20)  (h+ 26) = 0

So we get,   h = 20  or  h =  -26

Height can not be negative hence  h = 20 m

So side would be  20+6 =  26 m

Length of side is  26 m and height is 20 m
